The successful installation of the X-Band Doppler Radar at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization Tea Research Institute (KALRO-TRI) in Kericho marks a major milestone in advancing weather observation and climate services in Kenya. Implemented through the collaboration of the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), TAHMO, MicroStep-MIS, KALRO-TRI, and the TEMBO Africa Project, the radar is the first MicroStep meteorological radar installed in both Kenya and Africa.
The five-day installation process included infrastructure inspection, radar assembly, crane-assisted mounting, system calibration, connectivity setup, testing, and validation. Throughout the installation, KMD engineers received hands-on technical training on radar operation and maintenance, strengthening local capacity for long-term system management.
Despite challenges including unstable ground conditions, power interruptions, and limited internet connectivity, the installation was successfully completed through close collaboration between all partners. The radar underwent comprehensive calibration and performance testing before being validated for operation.
With a monitoring range of up to 200 km, the X-Band Doppler Radar will significantly improve the detection and monitoring of severe weather events, including heavy rainfall, storms, and floods. The system is expected to enhance weather forecasting, strengthen early warning services, support climate research, and improve decision-making for agriculture and disaster risk management across Kenya.
To ensure continuous operation, the report recommends installing a dedicated solar power backup, a standalone internet connection, and expanding the maintenance platform to support future maintenance activities.
