Flood Early Warning Systems(FEWS)

FEWS

Africa is the only continent where the number of flood victims has increased since 1990. Comprehensive flood protection through dikes is only possible in a very limited number of cases. Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) is seen as a very cost-efficient mitigation measure.

Our Products

The following are the products we provide. TEMBO provides five (5) products

Rainfall Maps

The maps here have low latency for operational services, such as crop insurance and flood warnings. They have a spatial resolution of 5km and a temporal resolution of three hours

Soil Moisture Maps

These maps have a continent-wide scalability and low latency of 2 days and help with bias removal.

Open Water

These products will develop river discharge time-series for selected sites as well as produce operational maps of open water and bathymetry of floodplains and reservoirs.

River discharge

These products in this category derive river discharge measurements, time series, and error estimates.

Floodplain Mapping & Bathymetry

These products translate existing remote sensing surface area and river width estimates into wetted profiles and reservoir volumes.

Impact

TEMBO Africa offers a range of technical solutions, combined with special attention to governance, often the main obstacle to successful implementation. This means that in addition to showing technical added value, raising awareness and building trust are key components of the initiative.

TEMBO Africa will increase the number of low-cost weather stations and the areal coverage of the data, and generate top-quality data records, which leads to improved weather forecasting in general, but also supports seasonal climate forecasting and climate change projections.
