Measuring river flow is essential for water management and flood forecasting. However, traditional methods often require entering the river, which can be difficult and unsafe, especially during high flow conditions.
Within TEMBO Africa, field installations in Zambia explored how cameras can be used to estimate river discharge without physical contact with the water.
The work was carried out by Rainbow Sensing and University of Zambia
Setting up the system
Cameras were installed overlooking river sections, capturing continuous image sequences. These images were then processed using software to track surface movement and estimate flow velocity.
By combining this with water level measurements, the system can derive discharge values.
The approach also included edge computing, allowing part of the data processing to happen directly on-site, reducing the need for constant data transmission.
Observations from the field
The system proved capable of providing continuous monitoring without exposing field teams to risk.
One of the key advantages observed was the ability to maintain long-term measurements, even during conditions when traditional methods would be difficult or unsafe.
