Improving reservoir monitoring at Bui Dam in Ghana
At Bui Dam in Ghana, managing water levels is critical for hydropower production, safety, and downstream impacts. Traditionally, many measurements relied on manual readings, limiting how quickly operators could respond to changing conditions. Within TEMBO Africa, a Reservoir Information Management System has been developed to improve monitoring and decision-making.
Building the system
The system integrates data from multiple sources, including GNSS sensors, weather data, and discharge measurements.
It provides operators with real-time insights into upstream inflows, downstream discharge, and overall reservoir conditions through a digital dashboard.
Field implementation and challenges
One of the key challenges encountered during implementation was communication. The dam is located in a remote area with limited network coverage, affecting real-time data transmission.
To address this, the team tested different solutions, including Wi-Fi-based communication and improved GNSS systems with better connectivity.
Observations
The integration of real-time data significantly improved situational awareness for operators, allowing them to monitor trends and respond more quickly to changes.
Outcomes
Digital dashboard developed and deployed
Real-time monitoring of water levels and inflows
GNSS-based monitoring of dam stability implemented
Communication challenges identified and addressed
Why it matters
Improving access to real-time information supports better decision-making and more efficient reservoir management.
