Strengthening Early Warning in Africa (SEWA) Scoping Study Workshop

Africa continues to experience a disproportionate burden of climate change impacts, marked by an increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, storms, and heatwaves. In its press release of 2 September 2024 and the State of the Climate in Africa 2024 report, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Early Warning Systems (EWS) across the continent to reduce climate-related losses and protect lives and livelihoods. Despite the availability of weather and climate data, many African institutions still face challenges in accessing….

Africa-EU collaboration

Africa is a continent on the rise. With over a billion people, the youngest population in the world (60 % of Africans are under the age of 25) and vast natural resources, it is brimming with potential. It also has a rapidly growing middle class, which means an increasing demand for resources, infrastructure and energy. By 2040, Africa will need therefore to double its energy supply. At the same time, 600 million people across the continent still do not have access to electricity. The African continent is also highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Droughts, floods and shifting weather patterns are already threatening livelihoods, ecosystems, food security and public health.

Tembo joined World Water Week 2025 to talk about ennsuring inclusive and sustainable Early Warning

From Warning to Action: Ensuring inclusive and sustainable Early Warning.
At World Water Week 2025, TAHMO’s CEO, Dr. Frank Annor, highlighted the critical role of maintaining Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) to ensure they are inclusive, sustainable, and future-proof.

Dr. Frank Annor joined other global experts from WMO, Water Resources Commission, Ghana, Netherlands Red Cross, HKV, and Deltares to discuss how innovation, governance, and community engagement can strengthen flood resilience and save lives worldwide.

TEMBO Africa - Transformative Environmental Monitoring

Our ambition is to close the environmental in situ data gap in Africa. To fulfill this ambition our general objective is to have cost-effective innovative sensor networks that can be financed by the climate services we develop using these sensors. First, we build on recent sensor technology to make measurements cost-efficient. Then, applications are developed that generate large socio-economic value in the fields of geo-hazards, water management, and agricultural information.

Low-cost solutions improve water management in Africa

For the African market in Ghana, Kenya and Zambia, the project focused on stakeholder-identified services related to geohazards, water management and agricultural information. Companies in multiple sectors will benefit from the services produced by project partners that include the Kenya Meteorological Department and the Ghana Agricultural Insurance Pool. Initially, the project considered bathymetry……

Global Forum of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) in Rome, Italy

The SAFE4ALL Living Lab Workshops in Tamale brought together farmers, researchers, policymakers, gender experts, youth representatives, and development practitioners to explore the realities of food security, climate change, gender dynamics, and migration in Northern Ghana. Over two days, participants exchanged evidence, stories, and practical experiences from the field, generating a deeper understanding of how local communities are adapting and what support they still need.

Understanding river discharge

Understanding river discharge is essential to estimating landscape responses to rainfall and other climatic driving forces, planning infrastructure, predicting floods and droughts, and assessing ecosystem conditions. Discharge measurements in Africa are scarce. Yet, there are several highly affordable and locally viable innovative techniques to measure discharge.

Modular Flood Early Warning System an Approach to Flood Adaptation

One major impact of climate change is the ever-increasing frequency of foods events as a result of deep convective storms exacerbated by the increase in global surface temperature. Therefore, flood early warning system (FEWS) is critical tool in safeguarding life and protection of property of the vulnerable communities.

Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) for Narok County in Kenya; A Key Decision Tool for Farmers and Disaster Managers

Frequent flooding is one of the consequences of the changing climate that is affecting most communities in Sub-Sahara Africa. When it rains it pours, and Narok County in the Southern parts of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya is a good example. Situated within the Valley of the Great Rift Valley Narok Town and Masai Mara National Reserve are hot spots for flood….

The Transformative Role of TAHMO in Empowering TEMBO Africa

In an era of rapid climate change and its far-reaching impacts, the need for accurate weather and climate data has become increasingly vital for communities, policymakers, and researchers alike. In Africa, where vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected by climate-related disasters, having access to reliable weather information can make a significant difference in the lives of millions. This is where the Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) steps in, playing a transformative role in empowering TEMBO Africa.
